Companies can gain early access to markets, increase market share or differentiate their brand through taking a proactive stance on biodiversity and ecosystem services. Increased shareholder value can be developed as a result of:
- Emerging markets: preference will be for low-resource consuming producers and companies upstream will increasingly specify certified sustainable raw materials, companies moving early into such markets may secure greater market share in an increasingly competitive market place
- Actions to increase competitive advantage through, for example, developing new technologies and processes which enable companies to reduce resource intensity, reduce degradation, improve efficiency, increase supply chain resilience and even restore the ecosystems on which they are dependent.
- Actions to increase security of supply: responsible manage of ecosystem services is likely to result in the ability to draw from such services into the future, increasing security of supply
- Development of new revenue streams: Companies in the FBT sector that hold land stocks may be able to benefit from payments for ecosystem services provided by their assests such as wetlands and forests.
